Under sun filled skies, on "Commencement Lawn," Westminster School
celebrated its 117th Commencement on Sunday, May 29 in front of an
enthusiastic audience of parents, family, friends and faculty.
Headmaster W. Graham Cole, Jr. led the program that included remarks
by faculty and students; the presentation of awards for academic,
artistic and athletic achievement; and the traditional passing of
diplomas.
Keynote Speaker - Julia Eells
Using the analogy of art and how opposite colors often bring out the best
and the brightest in each, Westminster School Assistant Headmaster
Julia Russell Eells painted a portrait of the Class of 2005. A former art
teacher and artist, Ms. Eells compared the class to an enduring piece
of artwork. Speaking to the 105 graduates and their families, Ms. Eells
emphasized the perspective of the class and that each classmate is an
important detail in the class portrait.

As with the rites of a Westminster spring, former lacrosse players,
families, and friends gathered to honor Dennis Daly in his last "home"
game as Head Coach of the Boys' First Lacrosse team during the annual
Hovey Alumni Lacrosse game in May. Not surprisingly, the span of former
Martlet players who attended this year's game included players who had
competed under the guiding hands of Hov, Eck, and Dennis during the last
twenty-five years of Westminster lacrosse, a true tribute to these men,
Westminster School, and the game of lacrosse. The following reflections,
written by Jeff Cady '96, highlight how life lessons on the lacrosse field
with Dennis have influenced the way he and other graduates have gone on to
live their respective lives.
I just arrived back home in Houston, Texas, after a weekend in Simsbury
for the annual Hovey Alumni Lacrosse game. Our alumni team must have been
suffering from severe jet lag for we were routed by the varsity 18-10. The
day, however, belonged to Coach Dennis Daly; it was his last home game as
head coach. At the game's end, Headmaster Graham Cole, Coach Todd Eckerson,
and Coach Daly spoke to the alumni, parents, and friends to address the
significance of the occasion. Since his arrival in 1990, Dennis Daly has
been an inspiration to the lacrosse program and the Westminster community.
I wish to take the opportunity to say "thank you" with my story of how
Coach Daly changed my life for the better.

This picture of Westminster icons Dick Hopley and Mike Jackson '49 was
taken at Reunion Weekend 2005 in Keyes Garden. Well loved teachers, with
over 70 years of teaching between them, they were also known for their
love of coaching lower team sports. Their patience and enthusiasm for
teaching of sports are honored still today, with the awarding of the
Hopley Jackson Award. The plaque reads, "Named in honor of Richard "Dick"
Hopley and Michael Jackson '49, teachers, coaches and friends with special
interest in lower teams and given seasonally to the Westminster lower team
with the best season."
