"438 COLLEGE, YOU'RE OUR HOME"

In early July, the College of Arts and Sciences moved from its home in Waterman to its
new headquarters in what people commonly referred to as "the nuns' house."
438 College, built by the Booth family in 1909, but most recently occupied by a Catholic
religious order, is now our home, and the College staff couldn't be more pleased.
As a result of a $3 million dollar investment, the building now provides staff with
comfortable surroundings in which to work and has quickly become a source of enormous
pride of place.
With attention to historical detail in evidence throughout, the house functions as a
thoroughly contemporary site for College students and faculty alike to meet, problem-solve,
and celebrate.

OPEN HOUSE 2006

On a picture perfect October morning, the College of Arts and Sciences
opened its doors from 10:30-12:30 to parents,
students, alumni, faculty and staff in celebration of Homecoming and
Parents Weekend. For many visitors it was the first
time to explore the lovely restoration of the Dean's new offices and
surroundings at 438 College Street. Dean Eleanor Miller
made a brief speech welcoming everyone and provided a history of the
home built by a lumber baron in 1909. Guests were
treated to hot apple cider, maple oatmeal bars and apple cider donuts
while a string and clarinet quartet from the Music
Department serenaded from the adjoining veranda.
COLLEGE OF ARTS AND SCIENCES WELCOMES UVM'S
NEW PROVOST (AND ARTS AND SCIENCES FACULTY MEMBER), DR. JOHN M. HUGHES
Among the many new professors who joined the College of Arts and Sciences faculty
this year is one who is special in many ways. This new Professor of Geology also
happens to be the new Provost, Dr. John M. Hughes.
Provost Hughes comes to UVM after a long and distinguished career at Miami
University of Ohio. He joined the faculty at Miami in 1981 as an Assistant
Professor and rose through the ranks to become a full professor, department
chair, associate dean, and most recently Associate Provost for Research and
Dean of the Graduate School.
Dr. Hughes is an accomplished mineralogist, with expertise in X-ray crystallography
and a history of extramural funding in support of his research, who remains engaged
in the research enterprise. At the same time, he is the recipient of several awards
that recognize his teaching expertise and his dedication to enhancing campus climate
for students and faculty alike. We hope you will join us in welcoming Provost Hughes
to UVM and to the ranks of College faculty.
AMAZON AND VERMONT:
A SYMPOSIUM IN HONOR OF THE WORK OF PROFESSOR JAMES B. PETERSEN

October 12-13, 2006
Memorial Lounge - Waterman Building
This year's 13th annual Hispanic Forum was dedicated to the work
of James B. Petersen, who was shot and died while doing field work in
the Amazon in the summer of 2005. Jim Petersen was an Associate Professor
of Anthropology and Chair of the Anthropology Department at the University
of Vermont. As a field archaeologist he worked in the Amazon, in the
Caribbean, and in the United States. The discoveries that he and his colleagues
Michael Heckenberger of the University of Florida and Eduardo Neves of the
University of Sao Paulo have made over the last two decades about the nature
of indigenous societal development in the Amazon during the centuries before
European arrival have dramatically changed the nature of the discussion about
early indigenous culture in the Amazon region. Though the archaeological
work continues, Jim's loss is greatly felt. This symposium paid tribute to
Jim by highlighting his work and by also considering the work of other UVM
faculty and Vermonters who are engaged with Amazon and Brazilian projects.

VERMONT GENETICS NETWORK (VGN) INBRE

VGN Overview: The Vermont Genetics Network (VGN) is funded by a five-year,
$16.5 million award from the National Center for Research Resources (NCRR), and
is part of a National Institutes of Health (NIH) initiative called IDeA Networks
of Biomedical Research Excellence (INBRE). Under the direction of Dr. Judith
Van Houten, the VGN, which links scientists at Castleton State College, Johnson
State College, Middlebury College, Norwich University and St. Michael's College
to resources at UVM, is designed to provide funding for research, equipment and
technology necessary to enhance competitiveness for national funding for genetics
research. Other aims of the project include increasing the number of undergraduates
who go on to biomedical careers from the baccalaureate colleges, to provide and
support bioinformatics capability in the state, and to increase the diversity of
biomedical scientists.

Report from the Director, Dr. Judith Van Houten
George H. Perkins Professor of Biology at the University of Vermont
The Vermont Genetics Network (VGN) has finished its first year of funding
in its INBRE phase. We are very proud of our accomplishments, which are
all due to the hard work of our staff and the faculty, whom we support.
A highlight of the year was the Press Conference at which Senator Patrick
Leahy announced our grant award. NCRR Acting Director Barbara Alving was
present at the Press Conference, and afterwards, she visited with our faculty
and staff for the entire day. It was a delight to showcase VGN talent to the
Director.

DEAN'S LECTURE AWARD WINNERS

Each semester the College of Arts and Sciences at UVM selects a faculty member to
receive the Dean's Lecture Award. This award honors a colleague who is an outstanding
teacher-scholar, an individual who is an acclaimed scholar or artist in his/her profession,
and who has demonstrated an unusual ability to share that excellence with students.
We view this as a celebration of the high quality of our faculty.
Richard Sugarman, Professor of Religion and Director of the Integrated Humanities
Program, is the Fall 2006 recipient of the Dean's Lecture Award. The Spring 2007 recipient
is Alison Brody, Associate Professor of Biology.
