Since the summer of 2006, 438 College Street has served as the home to the College's offices. We are very fortunate to call this beautiful historic building our home. The renovation project that prepared the building for us was committed to preserving the historic architecture of the building while adhering to sustainable "green" construction principles (as articulated by the U.S. Green Building Council's Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design - LEED - rating system). Last July, the Chittenden County Historical Society presented UVM with its "Preservation Award," recognizing "outstanding restoration of the architecturally significant structure at 438 College Street." And, just this past February, 438 College Street achieved LEED Gold certification (the second highest rating possible!).
What does this mean? It means we drew on locally-manufactured materials for nearly half of the renovation project. It means that more than three-quarters of the construction and demolition waste was diverted from the landfill. It means that we use about half as much water and energy as do conventionally-designed buildings. It means that we are able to support the students, faculty, and staff in our College in an historic ecologically-sensitive building (now entering its second century) that is, truly, both green and gold. Visitors are always welcome; please stop in so we can show you our magnificent home.
