The Gunnery graduation which took place on June 2nd, is the culmination
of the school year for faculty and staff and the focal goal toward which
students have been working since the minute they set foot on campus be it
one year or four years ago. Their years of hard work paid off when the
eighty-three members of the class of 2006 marched into the Meeting House
on the Green to the traditional Pomp and Circumstance before an audience
of proud parents, families, teachers, and friends.

Torrential downpours and dense fog could not dampen the spirits of Gunnery
alumni living it up together in the Big Apple. Led by Peter Feen '99 of
the Alumni Office, the New York Young Alumni Association had to forgo
their choice of a midtown rooftop in favor of the dry and comfortable
Rare Bar & Grill of the Shelburne Hotel as the venue for their third
event of the year. The comfortable surroundings were a conducive atmosphere
for socializing and celebrating the arrival of spring. Guests included
Gunnery alumni from 1984 through 2005.

With a focused sensibility and driving ambition, Simone Koo '00 fearlessly
threw herself into the fast-paced world of finance as a Financial Analyst
for Goldman Sachs. This position comes after years of intense study at both
The Gunnery and Georgetown University in Washington, DC. After an eight month
stint as a consultant in DC, she relocated to New York City, which she
describes as "the financial center of the world" to work at Goldman. Over
the summer, she will relocate to London to work as an Investment Professional
with Morgan Stanley.

Begun in 1999, the first website covered the basics with static photographs
and limited choices. In addition to enormous strides in graphic capabilities
(controls that rotate a database of images and allow quick, easy changes,
for example) and navigation ease, which allows the viewer to preview a menu
of contents before going to a page; the current site is becoming more
interactive (downloadable admissions applications and alumni day sign-ups)
and more responsive to the various constituencies of the school.

The final week of classes before exams is a fitting time for the first
celebration dedicated to the class of 2006: the Senior Class Dinner
sponsored by the Alumni Office. The dinner gives the school a chance
to honor the class, and the class a chance to assemble and share their
anticipation of graduation festivities and memories of their Gunnery
experience.

For six and a half hours on May 15th Gunnery students had a chance to
relive a 19th century school day at Mr. Gunn's School. Kyley Cheever,
the Gunn Scholar for 2005-2006 presented a partially-scripted program
employing over twenty-five volunteer student actors which included classes,
a school meeting, a Civil War preparatory drill, a 19th century lunch
prepared by the dining hall food service, and punishments that Mr. Gunn
is known to have imposed. English department chair, John Alter assumed
the part of Mr. Gunn. Students and faculty could observe during their
free periods from risers in the one room schoolhouse. The whole school
attended a re-enacted school meeting (Mr. Gunn was an early proponent
of student participation in the governance of the school).

"Find a balance. Part of your job is to manage the job; the other part
is to manage yourself. Look for other opportunities within the company
and lobby, not overtly, but enough for people to notice you." This was
the sage advice offered by Jonathan S. Linen '62, recently retired Vice
Chairman of American Express, where he has been employed since 1969.
"I had no idea what I wanted to do after I graduated college. I knew I
wanted to work in the business world, so I interviewed at organizations
that had great training programs. I knew that, through these programs,
I could learn a lot, take what I needed from them, and market myself for
future employment opportunities. I was very lucky to be hired by a great
organization."

Senior Brad Mahler recently attended The Mentor Series, a four day photo workshop
in New York City sponsored by leading photography magazines, Popular Photography
and American Photo Magazine. The youngest of the participants, Brad had the
opportunity to improve his natural skill and talent working with four professional
photographers including James Porto, Ross Whitaker, Chris Alvanas, and Rick Salmon.
"I had the chance to shoot several NYC landmarks including the Brooklyn Bridge, Times
Square, and Grand Central Station. I also shot the city skyline from a boat at night
and from the top of the Empire State Building at 4:30a.m."
Brad developed an interest in photography in the 7th grade. Some early
teachers taught him the basics, but, for the most part, everything he knows is self
taught. "I'm mostly interested in sports and concert photography. When shooting
athletics, I never shoot with tripods or other mounting equipment. With concerts
and studio portraits, I look for the right expression and angle. The expression in
the eyes is what makes the picture." In the fall, Brad will attend Chapman University
in CA to major in business and minor in photography.
