Alumni Weekend 2007 brought the largest contingent of classmates and friends
seen on this campus in quite some time. The buzz and laughter at receptions,
lunches, and dinners brought the campus back to life. The weekend stirred
many emotional moments from the jubilation of the Alumni Procession to the
bittersweet good-bye to long time faculty member William Chase.

Going once. . .going twice. . . almost sold. . ..
To put it simply, we need your help. With the auction scheduled for Friday,
October 19th, The Gunnery Parent Council is looking for auction donations.
So far, we have accumulated a number of auction items; however, we still
need more before the bidding wars begin.
Creative thinking about donations makes for a fun evening. Jewelry,
gift baskets, trips, sporting event tickets, wine, and vacations have been
donated in years past. We will gladly accept those again and more.
Preparations are well underway for this popular Gunnery campus event. Our
returning parents can remember this annual celebration as an evening of good
food, great company, and well-deserved adult time during Parents Weekend.
All auction donations must be in to Kendall Adams (contact info:
adamsk@gunnery.org) by
October 1st. Future updates will be made in the next issue of On the Go.

Date: August 29, 2007
Time: 10:00 a.m.
All parents are invited as The Parent Council discusses school-related
activities for the upcoming year including the auction.

Frederick Gunn's cousin Will Brinsmade built and founded the Ridge School
where the Mayflower now stands in 1894. That school was to prepare students
for the college entrance exams. The Gunnery and the Ridge shared athletic
and drama facilities. A Gunnery and Ridge graduate, Harry Van Sinderen
bought the buildings in 1919 when the Ridge closed, and converted the
Rossiter-designed buildings to an inn. When Mr. Van Sinderen died in 1968,
he willed the inn and its 33 acres to The Gunnery, which, having leased the
property to a series of managers, sold it in 1976. In 1991, Robert and
Adrianna Mnuchin converted the homey country style inn into a five star
destination resort and spa, which was sold this month to a San Diego hotel
conglomerate, American Properties Management.

Amanda Seitz '00 looks at fashion as a piece of art. It is an art form that,
in her opinion, is embraced by many people who enjoy expressing their
creativity and individualism in the clothes they wear. Trends, styles, and
tastes change on a yearly, sometimes monthly, basis, and Amanda makes it her
business to always stay one step ahead of the general public as a buyer for
the family-owned J. Seitz & Company in New Preston, CT. The store
specializes in clothing for women, men, and children, home furnishings and
accessories, and jewelry.
After completing three years at the University of New Mexico, Amanda yearned
to move back east and completed her degree at the Fashion Institute of
Technology (FIT). "I grew up in retail," said Amanda. "I always had a
love for this business. I remember being voted best-dressed at The
Gunnery."

Physician Norman Polk '63 looks back to earlier times with great fondness. "In the
1960s, doctors were held in high regard," he explains. "Nowadays, you can be sued
at the drop of a hat. Also, one third of all physicians are within five years
of retirement, and we are not replacing them. We're in a bit of a medical crisis
now." This growing trend hasn't soured Norman's view of the medical world and
his colleagues all over the world. "The old guys, like me, don't retire. They
will work into their 70s."
Before he ever picked up a stethoscope, performed an examination, or learned
how to write with zero legibility, Norman was a kid living in the inner city
of Washington, DC. "During this time, prep schools were looking to diversify,"
said Norman. His mother, a school teacher, got wind of this, and before he
knew it, he relocated to another "city" Washington. "I thrived at The Gunnery.
I was a Prefect, a quarterback, and a recipient of The Gunnery Cup. I did well
enough to get into Harvard."
