The Gunnery will introduce Mandarin Chinese language into its curriculum next year. Assistant Head and Dean of Faculty Eileen Kelly-Aguirre announced that The Gunnery's application for a Chinese teacher from the College Board-Hanban Chinese Guest Teacher Program has been accepted and a highly qualified teacher from China will be joining The Gunnery's faculty in the fall. "When we dedicate our new World Languages and Cultures Center in the renovated schoolhouse next fall, we will inaugurate a new era with the introduction of Mandarin Chinese," said department chair, Karen Lincoln.

"Next year, we will offer beginning Chinese and perhaps an accelerated introductory level for students who have fulfilled their language requirement. Karen and I will work with the new teacher to develop a curriculum leading eventually to a complete language offering including the AP course," said Ms. Aguirre. "Our goal is to develop a curricular pathway that would make it possible for a highly motivated student to reach the AP level in four years. Students with prior experience in Mandarin will be able to continue their studies beginning in the fall of 2011."

The Cornell University Department of Fiber Science and Apparel Design has awarded Yea Weon Kim '12 second place in its annual High School Student Fashion Design Competition. Yea Weon and her teacher Brian Lillie traveled to Ithaca to receive the award on the weekend of March 13th and 14th at the 26th Annual Fashion Show organized by the Cornell Design League. Yea Weon said of the experience, "At Cornell, I had a great time! I met so many people, and it encouraged me to go further....I was pretty nervous but also excited. It was my first time to go to a reception and have conversations with professionals. Their conversations were pretty profound."

The contest is organized by the fashion design program in the FSAD at Cornell University. The competition, judged by a panel of department faculty and alumnae, attracted entries from more than 300 high school designers nationwide. [continued]

"I attribute my success to The Gunnery," said Will McKee '06. "I learned time management and other life lessons such as working hard, extending yourself outside of athletics into academics; both require a lot of work and time to get what you want to achieve." Will's hard work has paid off at the collegiate level. Currently, he is a Division I lacrosse player at Duke University.

In his short time there, he has made an indelible mark. In 2007, he was named the Liberty League Rookie of the Year and finished the season ranked fourth on the team in points (31), second in goals (25) and sixth in assists (6). In 2008, he was named to the USILA All-America Division III Third Team and voted as the Liberty League Player of the Year after leading the league in goals (2.93) and points (4.36) per game, among other successes. In 2009, he finished eighth on the team in points (22) and goals (16) in his first Division I season and scored at least one point in seven of the final eight games of the season.

Will has always been an athlete. He started playing lacrosse in the second grade and hockey in middle school. His passion for athletics grew at The Gunnery where he played football, hockey, and lacrosse. [continued]
