Gunnery scholar-athlete Chance Logan '08 recently announced his decision to attend Georgetown University to continue his studies and play NCAA Division I football. Logan plans to arrive in Washington, DC this September and chose Georgetown after entertaining offers from various other Division I schools. The 5'10" running back ultimately felt that Georgetown provided him the best opportunity to thrive both in the classroom and on the playing field. US World and News Report ranked Georgetown as the 23rd best university in the nation, while the Hoya football program competes in the highly competitive Patriot League. Upon his commitment, Logan commented, "My time at The Gunnery has been outstanding. I have never experienced a community so tightly knit where it seems that everyone is part of one big family. Everyone is there for each other in a time of need and everyone also celebrates for any and all accomplishments. Like The Gunnery community, The Gunnery football program is a family rather than just a football team. The Gunnery football program taught me discipline, and that it takes all eleven players in order to achieve the goal of winning every game."

"My goal is to help students find a good fit among the colleges they are considering," said Emily FitzHugh, College Counselor. In their junior year, she meets with the students and their parents. Emily provides each with a list of colleges to be researched, considered, and visited. "College admissions have been increasingly competitive over the last several years," she said, "so we feel fortunate that our students are doing so well in this process."

The Freshman Trip to Lake Placid is not one of intense academic enlightenment but one of bowling, pizza, and mindless entertainment. Extremely high winds on Whiteface Mountain prevented the 9th graders from skiing. Instead, we went through the Olympic Regional Development Association, and they took us on a tour of where the Olympic Athletes train and live. We also toured the Olympic ski jumps and were taught how to luge on "lazer luge sleds" which are designed for use in the snow. Faculty member (and brave soul) Jeffrey Trundy made it about ten yards before flipping off and ending up with a face full of snow.
The trip was originally formed to foster a sense of community amongst the freshman class. "This year, I believe that we were pretty successful in this goal," said faculty member, Craig Badger. "All of the kids seemed to get along very well - no one was left out of anything. What is good about having a class of only 41 students is that every student can truly get to know everyone in the class - I think for most of the kids, this trip helped them in this. All reports have been very positive; hopefully they made friends and memories that will last well beyond their four years here at The Gunnery."

Luck was a lady in The Gunnery Drama Society’s winter musical, Guys & Dolls. An all-student cast, crew, and orchestra pit delivered one of the most memorable performances in recent history. The cast members shone in the multiple musical numbers and witty scenes long associated with this Frank Loesser classic.
Joshua Johnston '09 (Sky Masterson), Elizabeth Hawley '08 (Sarah Brown), Peter MacKenna '08 (Nathan Detroit), and Sage Bachmann '08 (Miss Adelaide) delivered layered and disciplined performances, finding the right balance of humor and theatrical pathos. Each of the two pair of lovers had its moment to shine*. Josh shone as the suave head gambler, particularly in the popular number, "Luck be a Lady." Elizabeth's larger than life personality came through in all the right places, particularly in the ten- minute "Havana" dance sequence. Her lyrical soprano voice gave a soothing touch to her many ballads including "If I Were a Bell" and "I'll Know." Peter and Sage were paradoxical in their performances: funny, yet heartfelt. The audiences, amused by the antics of their fifteen year engagement, truly wanted to see the two of them tie the knot at the end of the show.

The Gunnery's Ski Team did very well at the championship meet for the Berkshire-Hudson League in February. Sam Funk '09 took first place for Men's Varsity both in the championship race and, more impressively, the season overall. Rachael Henne '09 took 3rd place for Women's Varsity for the season. Mike Brice took 1st place for J.V. in the championship. The team placed second out of seven teams for the season, a stellar showing for a first year effort.
This was a new team for winter term at The Gunnery this year. Dana Jackson, a new member of the English department, arrived with experience racing for UCLA. He arrived just in time to fulfill the desires of an avid group of skiers who wanted to raise their skill level a notch or two. Last year these athletes hired a coach individually, but without meets, they couldn't experience the thrills of competition. So, with their own financing and parental support, the group of nine skiers joined the Berkshire-Hudson League of seven schools for the 2007-2008 season.
