The Gunnery On the Go - October 2011

The Gunnery is proud to announce that twenty-two of its students have earned the designation of AP Scholar in recognition of their exceptional achievement on the AP exams.

The College Board's Advanced Placement Program provides willing and academically prepared students the opportunity to take rigorous college-level courses while still in high school, and to earn college credit, advanced placement, or both for successful performance on the AP Exams. [continued]

Approximately 225 grandparents and parent chaperones visited their Gunnery grandchildren in late September for a day of classes, presentations, and fun. The increasingly popular Grandparents Day, started in 1997, allows the senior members of the family to live a day in the life of their Gunnery grandchild. Events of the day included class visits, a performance by a student vocal group, The Troubadours, a Q&A with selected students, and a community luncheon.

"Grandparents Day is one of my favorite events throughout the year," said Laura Eldridge, Director of Institutional Advancement. "Loved ones traveled from as far away as France and Germany. The special bond between a grandparent and grandchild is unquestionable. Their faces beam with pride and joy when they first greet their grandchild. I am so proud of all our students as they are so respectful and caring towards their grandparents and hosting, with pride, all the visitors who navigate throughout The Gunnery campus that day."

Mid-August saw the return of administrators and veteran teachers to campus, preparing to welcome a group of new colleagues to The Gunnery faculty.

Dean of Faculty and Assistant Head of School Eileen Kelly-Aguirre led the new faculty orientation program, which included sessions on planning and grading, technology, residential life, coaching and more.

Listed here are the new faculty and their responsibilities for the coming year: [continued]

It was a beautiful day for the annual School Walk, with sunny skies and cool temperatures. As is the tradition, classes were cancelled for the day and the entire school community headed out for a long walk in Steep Rock to celebrate Mr. Gunn's birthday. Every year there is much speculation about how long the walk really is — 6 miles? 6.5 miles? Maybe even 7? — but this year Mr. Graham set the record straight as he tracked our route on his phone, using My Tracks. [continued]

Steve Bailey's Physics classes joined with members of the Outdoor Club and the students of Simon Langlois at Le Cégep Marie-Victorin School in Montreal, Quebec, Canada to find the circumference of the earth. They used a method first devised by the Greek mathematician, astronomer, and geographer Eratosthenes in 240 BC. [continued]

Has to be after 1965 because they are using the chairs from the "chapel" which was in Bourne. Ergo "South Pacific". Sandy Gilbert '60

Tara Connolly '09 has been busy since graduating from The Gunnery, a mere two years ago. She is an active student-athlete at Bowdoin College and is in the throes of laying out her post-college life.

The Simsbury, CT native is currently majoring in history and minoring in education. "I am considering teaching history after I graduate," said Tara. "The big joke was that I would come back and teach at The Gunnery." [continued]
