The Gunnery On the Go - March 2012

Yea Weon Kim '12 has been making news with her clothing designs since she was a sophomore. Now she is putting her sense of style to the supreme test and learning a skill vital to an emerging career possibility in the process. Yea Weon has designed her graduation dress and has spent winter term sewing and constructing it in an independent study class.

Teresa Layman P '11, a Vogue pattern maker for 15 years and a seamstress of regional renown has been helping her. They have worked two hours every day after classes. [continued]

The Gunnery Girls' Ice Hockey team defeated Kingswood Oxford (3-0) on March 1, 2012 to advance to the semifinals. They later played against Middlesex at the Berkshire School in Sheffield, MA on Saturday, March 3rd (1-3, Middlesex).

Excitement was in the air as the girls arrived at Kingswood-Oxford. Several members of the school community came out in support of them. After Katie Quinlan '13 won the face off, the game went off into high gear. [continued]

This past February, Grammy Award winning vocalist and producer Roberta Flack offered a lecture and musical performance as part of The Gunnery's Speaker Series. The Meeting House on the Green was packed with students, faculty, locals, and guests from all areas of the state.

The Gunnery owes Ms. Flack's visit to student Lindsay Jerry-Collins '12 who suggested that we bring this musical legend to campus as the school celebrated Black History Month. Lindsay's parents, Dennis Collins and Sharon Jerry-Collins, are jazz musicians and close friends of Ms. Flack. [continued]

It's a rigorous, math-laden course with colorful, moving robots at the end of the term as a reward for the hard work. To the uninitiated, the colorful robots look like an assemblage of Legos© for the grandchildren, but for the students they are intricate machines which they can build and power themselves. Congratulations to wrestlers, Frederick Marks '12 who won the New England Prep Championship in the 220 lb. weight class and to Connor Dintino '14 who made it to the semi-finals and came in fourth in the 285 lb. weight class. These two awards made them eligible to compete at the national level.

"Fred won a dramatic match in the last two seconds of the third period," said wrestling coach, Bart McMann, "He reversed his opponent from Exeter to win 4-2. Connor came in 4th place and wrestled valiantly all weekend. Rod Theobald (head wrestling coach) carried both wrestlers to the podium on his shoulders." [continued]
