The Gunnery - On The Go - September 2009

The magnanimous gift from the Tisch family will enable The Gunnery to begin the enormous project of bringing the schoolhouse building into the 21st century, expanding its capacity and its scope. Since the 1980s The Gunnery's student body has increased from 240 to nearly 300. This project has been on the drawing boards for five years. Scheduled to be accomplished in two phases, the new center for humanities studies will be renamed the Tisch Academic Center.

First a little history: The Gunnery's schoolhouse has stood in its place since 1882 when E. K. Rossiter '69 designed the first building. Headmaster Hamilton Gibson renovated the building in 1925 so it would be in keeping with the Colonial Revival quad he was creating with architect Richard Henry Dana. In 1937, Tertius van Dyke added a lower school to The Gunnery and expanded the building to accommodate it. At the time it had 1,831 window panes and it still did according to Bill Chase who counted them in 2001. [continued]

On Sunday, September 13, 2009 Head of School Susan Graham, Assistant Head Eileen Kelly-Aguirre, Dean of Students Chris Baudo, and the head of student government, senior prefect Jessica L'Heureux welcomed the school community back to campus at Convocation, an event that formally begins the school year.

The naming of the highest scholars by grade level for the previous year (2008-2009) is the high point of the ceremony. The top scholars in the school were also named. Kevin Tarsa '09, who is currently attending Wake Forest University, was second top scholar in the school. This year, the top honors and honors for the senior class last year went to Zi Wang '09, who is at Carnegie Mellon University. Joo Yun Lee (eleventh grade last year), Zachary Nathaniel Bodnar (tenth grade last year) and Charlotte Elizabeth Carew-Miller (9th grade last year) also received awards for their achievements. Los Angeles resident and producer Patrick Baker '89 is bringing the green world to the celluloid world. Currently, he is overseeing a documentary on the Plastiki Expedition, the brainchild of British Adventurer David de Rothschild who is building a 60 ft catamaran made entirely out of 12,000 post consumer-recycled two liter bottles and other reusable materials that he intends to sail 10,000 nautical miles from San Francisco to Sydney, Australia in the fall of 2009. National Geographic Films will release the two-hour series in the fall of 2010. Patrick oversees all production matters involving the film on behalf of Smart Productions.

David and his team are currently building the Plastiki at the pier in San Francisco. The purpose of the expedition is to raise awareness for ocean waste. "The trip is a platform for smart thinking, idea exploration, and uninhibited curiosity. The main pollutant in the ocean is plastic," said Patrick. "Plastic gets into the ocean system and our marine life and then gets cycled back into our system." [continued]

Last year (2008-2009) was the 50th year of the Stray Shot tradition at The Gunnery. When the ladies of the class of 2008 (LB Schmidt, Priyanka Shetty, Erin Kelly, and Lindsay Lincoln) recounted their successful search for the Stray Shot cannonball at the end of the school year in 2008, they could not have imagined the intensity of the 2009 hunt which they would unleash. Their clever and elaborate clues and passwords lodged with faculty and staff for the new school year started a fairly large group of hunters on the chase. As the clues got more difficult, the crowd was winnowed down. Finally, Josh Johnston, Joe Mashburn, JP Gould , and Kevin Tarsa, working as a team, found the 36 lb. ball, digging it out from under a bush near Gibson. [continued]

On a beautiful night alongside the Chattahoochee River, The Gunnery's Atlanta alumni threw a wonderful party at the Canoe Restaurant. Gunnery Council members Mikey Hersom '89 and Sarah Scheel Cook '82, along with Mark Lazarus '82 and Ann Lipham '79 & P '10 arranged this event. "We had 31 people at this reception, which is a lot," said Mikey. "It was great. Everybody told some great stories about their Gunnery experiences." [continued]

Kate Marek '05 identified the boisterous supporters of The Gunnery's boys' hockey team. This game during her sophomore year "was a lot of fun," as she remembers it, although the opponent and the score escape her.

Francesca Moscatelli '80 has always had an interest in what people buy. "Why do some people buy Coke and some buy Pepsi," she asks. "It is packaged differently yet what is inside is kind of similar." With this natural passion and talent for ascertaining the buying habits of consumers, she pursued a career in the advertising world and currently runs her own marketing business specializing in qualitative research.
