On the Go - May 2010

The results of the student government elections for prefect and head prefect for 2010-2010 were announced this past week. The results are: Adam DeSanctis, head prefect, Isaiah Boswell, Taylor Rogerson, Millie Huang, Lauren Castaldi, and Andy Powers.

To prepare for the vote, the whole school gathered to hear the candidates explain their positions on school leadership. The Gunnery administration gives its students the chance to institute change on campus. If the students aren't completely satisfied with something, they are allowed to state their case. Earth Day 2010 on Saturday, April 17th, provided another opportunity for Gunnery's students to demonstrate the power of their numbers on behalf of a worthy cause. Sarah Jenkins and Carlos Canal had organized the town wide cleanup event and Assistant Dean of Students Kate Merritt was directed to Gunnery's neighbor Eliza Paolucci to plan the best routes for the boundless energy of our 108 freshmen and sophomores. The Arts and Letters Luncheon is a relatively new rite of spring and the kick -off to the awards season as The Gunnery's commencement date approaches. It is a celebration of artistic endeavors performing, visual and written.

Beginning his presentation with a poem by Stephanie Hoffmann '10, John Alter began the celebration by announcing the three junior students who received the highest grade on their JRP papers: Zach Bodnar '11, Chuyan "Millie" Huang '11, and Chaoyang Liu '11. The school publishes these papers and keeps them in a permanent collection of student work. [continued]

"I stayed connected to The Gunnery long after I graduated," said Kate Marek '05. "(Gunnery faculty members) Shannon and Chris Baudo, Jon Russillo, Jeff Trundy, and Ed Small came to my games at Hamilton." Kate's stellar experience as a Gunnery student and her deep relationship to Shannon Baudo influenced her decision in returning to The Gunnery to work in its Admissions Office. Now, Kate works alongside the woman who made her experience so memorable. Together, with the rest of the Admissions staff, they work with prospective families all over the globe.

Kate, a native of Alexandria, VA, was a three-season athlete at The Gunnery and was especially active on the school's varsity girls' ice hockey team. [continued]

The Gunnery held its first full-blown "Career Day" for upperclassman in mid-April, and it was successful enough to replicate in future years.

Both students and returning alumni who offered their counsel — some of whom came from as far away as California — called it a great learning experience.

"I was as fascinated by what my fellow panelists had to say as the students seemed to be," said Andrea Marron '04.

Alumni participants came from class years ranging from 1950 to 2004, most of them hailing from Connecticut, New York, New Jersey and Massachusetts. Patrick Baker '89, an independent film producer, flew in from Los Angeles. [continued]

The girls' varsity tennis team was once again victorious as they defeated Cheshire Academy on Wednesday by a score of 6-1. Megan Bilotti '11 played an excellent match and put persistent pressure on her opponent by minimizing her own mistakes and playing solid, fundamental tennis. She got the winning ways started for the Gunnery by defeating her opponent 10-8. Tori Lussier '10 defeated her opponent 10-1 after playing her own brand of mistake free tennis. Sarah Lombard '12 was also impressive and steady in her 10-0 performance over Cheshire's third singles player. Also winning were the doubles teams of Lauren Castaldi '11 and Paulina Fetha '11, Sophie Bickley '10 and Hiroko Tsuburai '10, and Charlotte Bickley '12 and Chao Liu '11. [continued]

The Gunnery AP Macro and AP Micro classes ventured into downtown New York City to see the business and finance epicenter of the world. Led by Academic Dean, Jarrod Sisk, the students visited the New York Stock Exchange, the Museum of American Finance, and the Federal Reserve Bank. The day ended with a shopping excursion on the South Street Seaport.

"It was a really fun day," said Marena Izzi '10. "You read about the stock exchange in books. It was really cool to see it all in person. We went to the main trading floor at the NYSE. At the Museum, we looked at the exhibits in the Hamilton Room. I was personally interested in an exhibit on entrepreneurs. We also saw exhibits on coins and counterfeits."
