The Gunnery - On The Go - March 2010

This past winter, The Gunnery welcomed Laura D. Eldridge as the new Director of Institutional Advancement. "The Gunnery is a beautiful school in so many ways," said Laura. "Susan Graham's tenure and leadership qualities speak volumes when one walks on campus. The upbeat attitudes of the students, tireless commitment of the faculty and beautiful buildings and grounds reflect the management from the highest level which includes the trustees. I am also impressed with the depth of programs and opportunities for alumni involvement with the school. Thomas Hollinger (former Director of Institutional Advancement) has worked hard with the rest of the team to accomplish this in the last twenty years."

Prior to The Gunnery, Ms. Eldridge spent eighteen years working in the development offices of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (1989-1992), Kent School (1992-2005) and Salisbury School (2005-2007). [continued]

Once again making school history, The Gunnery defeated Berkshire 2-1 at home on Saturday afternoon to clinch their second consecutive NEPSHC West Championship and a bid into the New England Division I "Elite Eight" Tournament.

Saturday's game took all 54 minutes to decide with both teams battling hard throughout. The Highlanders opened the scoring midway through the first period on a Terrence Wallin '11 goal. The UMass-Lowell recruit received a stretch pass from defenseman Dan Divis '11 and walked in all alone on the Berkshire goaltender. [continued]

Leslie Kumar '99 proudly announces the opening of her jewelry line, NYLA STAR which offers good pieces that transition from day to night. All pieces are vermeil (sterling silver with 14K gold overlay, clear, and colored cubic zirconia. The pieces are aimed for all age groups from early 20s to early 90s. "These are good pieces to travel with," said Leslie. "They are for the ladies who don't want to take real diamonds on vacation. They look real, but they are not."

For Leslie, owning and operating her own jewelry business was always a dream of hers. She started her career in sales, marketing, and public relations at Lee Angel, a jewelry company. [continued]

The winter musical, Once on this Island, was a tremendous success if the reaction of the audience is any indicator. Set in the French Caribbean, the mythological tale of the results of a crippling storm on the delicate balance of cultures hiding bigotry, racism and classism was beautifully sung and acted, with compelling costumes, staging, and dance. The production's success was helped by a disciplined and energetic cast, a set which took maximum advantage of The Gunnery's stage, dancing and movement alternating between the world of the gods, the dreams, and the realities, and the almost operatic approach to the telling of the story which highlighted the lyric voices of the cast. It was an unforgettable day in the ceramics room. The students of The Gunnery's Visual Arts Department sat spell bound as master potter Guy Wolff of Litchfield created historic pots during a daylong master class. It was hard to tell whether it was the swift sure technique of a master craftsman, the interweaving of references to the school and their life as students, the tales of his rise in his profession or the history of the artistic details of his creations which provoked the concentrated attention. In any event, Mr. Wolff proved to be not only a master craftsman, but also a master teacher, quoting Emerson while telling the tale of his pots being given to Oprah Winfrey by Martha Stewart. We had several answers identifying James Thornton '89 working with Guy Wolff (see accompanying story) in the basement of Gunn Dorm. Benjamin Ericson '89 said, "JT could throw a mean pot," and he thinks the photo was taken their freshman year.

We also got an answer to the January question from senior Dan Goldberg whose JRP was one of the winning papers last year. He says, "My topic, which focused on the history of African-American students at The Gunnery and their connection to Malcolm X, was inspired by the picture in question. I came across the photo in the
1969 Red & White (Gunnery Yearbook) with a headline that read, 'The Broderbond.'

"The students in the back row (on the rock, left to right) are: Summrour, Meekins, Taylor, Loves, & Graves. The front row (left to right): Slaughter, Anderson, Melvin Jones (35 X Shabaaz), & Riley." If you would like to read more, we will gladly send you a copy of Dan's paper.

In the cold Northeast, we're looking forward to the Florida baseball trips during spring break and the beginning of baseball and softball season in April. Who is this fielder? What year? Extra points if you can identify the umpire and the opposing team.

"I attribute my success to The Gunnery," said Will McKee '06. "I learned time management and other life lessons such as working hard, extending yourself outside of athletics into academics; both require a lot of work and time to get what you want to achieve." Will's hard work has paid off at the collegiate level. Currently, he is a Division I lacrosse player at Duke University.

In his short time there, he has made an indelible mark. In 2007, he was named the Liberty League Rookie of the Year and finished the season ranked fourth on the team in points (31), second in goals (25) and sixth in assists (6). [continued]
