The Advancement Office hosted a reception for alumni and parents in the Boston area on December 2, 2009. Approximately forty people attended this event which was held at the Palm Restaurant at the Westin Copley Plaza Hotel. Visit The Gunnery website to view a photo gallery of the reception.

The residents of Van Sinderen dormitory were delighted when they returned from classes one day to find a completely re-furnished, redecorated common room. Joanie Hall P'10 and her mother Barbara Baekgaard GP '10 brought some first rate, home-style comfort to the area with new couches, ottomans, mirrors, lamps, and a flat screen television. Mrs. Baekgaard and Mrs. Hall donated all items which came from a number of retail outlets including Mrs. Baekgaard's own company, Vera Bradley. In 2007, these generous ladies remodeled Bourne's common area. Mrs. Hall explained that when she and daughter Frannie came for a campus visit, the common room was "the one thing that was wrong with The Gunnery." With her daughter Frannie barely here for a month, she took the initiative to give something special back to the school.

Mr. Ian Bickley, parent of students Sophie '10 and Charlotte '12, recently joined The Gunnery's Board of Trustees. He will attend his first board meeting in January 2010. Due to his extensive international travel, he plans to assist the Advancement Office with fundraising efforts, visiting Gunnery constituents in Asia and Europe.
With two daughters thriving at The Gunnery, Ian felt it was time to give something back to the school. "The Gunnery is having a profound impact on our kids' development as individuals. In many respects, there are opportunities to spread the word about Gunnery's unique experience. This experience is highly personalized where students from different backgrounds can really thrive in a nurturing, intimate environment. Every student receives personal attention from his/her teachers, so none of them get lost in the shuffle."

Krista Lukos '04 has been hard at work as an entrepreneur since college. With two other friends, she worked on the creation of Uncorked, a wine tasting bistro in West Hartford, CT. This new establishment will add to the ever-growing BlueBack Square area. "I have always loved wine," said Krista. "Working on this business was the perfect excuse to make wine my hobby. What 23 year old can afford wine as a hobby?"
This business was the brain child of her two business associates. While vacationing in Florida, they came across a wine bistro. They brought the idea of patrons sampling wine selections at various stations back to Connecticut. Krista joined the project in May 2009. "I talked with distributors, hired people, and worked on menu and website development. I also worked on a lot of little details like picking out the wine glasses and light fixtures." And what was the real benefit to her professional position? "I received so many bottles of free wine."

The Gunnery Drama Society presented a disciplined and multi-layered interpretation of An Enemy of the People written by Henrik Ibsen and adapted by Arthur Miller. Miller's adaptation passionately dramatizes the irrational tendencies and hypocrisies of public leadership and the mass audience. Under the direction of Performing Arts Department Chair, Jennifer Wojcik, the play garnered thunderous applause by an enthusiastic audience.
In an effort to stimulate student interest and ownership prior to the play's opening, The Gunnery's curriculum committee selected this piece as its all-school summer reading, making it a requirement that all students read Miller's work before their return from break.

Gunnery athletes were honored at the Athletic Banquet on November 16, 2009. After congratulating the athletes and coaches on a wonderful season, Athletic Director Jon Russillo announced a new award that would be given at year's end to the team which had the best academic merit score. The non-competitive afternoon programs such as outdoor club, community service, the winter musical and arts option would be included in this award process. [continued]

Peter Barhydt '87 and Karen Lincoln helped us with this answer. Sometime between 1985 and 1988, we installed a new computer lab in the General Science Room on the second floor. There was no memory in the computer and you saved everything on big floppy disks. All tenth graders had to take a computer literacy class in BASIC programming. Peter thinks that's Bobby Gordon in the foreground. [view larger image]

The Gunnery invites Washington citizens to a party to kick off the holiday season just before Thanksgiving. We think this is the town New Years' Party, which The Gunnery hosted for many years. Does anyone know when the parties were discontinued? When this party was? Who some of the guests are?

Photographer, Phil Dutton '81 has become a face on campus familiar to many students and faculty. Many of The Gunnery's recent photographs come from his own camera. Over the past year, he has developed bonds with the students through his attendance at their activities and provided beautiful shots of the school's campus and those who inhabit it. Most of On the Go's readers know him through his website, phototrophies.com, where he features his photographs of the school's athletic events and specifically photos of individual students at the games. The Gunnery, however, is only one of the many clients for Philip Dutton Photography.
