On the Go turns five this year. Mind you, that pales in comparison to The Gunnery's 159 years, but nevertheless, I am glad that this publication has lasted this long. Since 2004, this newsletter has been designed to be more than just a newsletter. It was a chance to take you down memory lane, reconnect you with former friends and, most of all, bring The Gunnery to you as it is today. We promise to deliver more nostalgia, current updates, and future initiatives in various forms of media. Thank you for reading and here's to the next five years.
All the best,
Todd Santa Maria

The Gunnery social event of the year is almost upon us. The Parent Auction Committee is diligently working to ensure that this year's Parent Auction far surpasses the rest. They have most of the necessary ingredients: a beautiful space to hold the auction, dynamic auctioneers, and enough food and beverages to feed the spectators of both political conventions. However, they still need one crucial ingredient, and they are asking for your help.
The sky's the limit when it comes to auction donations! There are a variety of categories and a need for items at a wide range of values. Do you own or frequent a business that could make a donation? Do you have a special talent or skill? Do you have expertise in a particular field? Are you (or do you know) a wine enthusiast or gourmet chef?
Auction items range in interest, destination and value. Check out a sampling of items donated to date:
- A "Texas Wine Basket" donated by Heidi and Nick Richardson (P '09)
- An ocean front beach house at Pawleys Island, SC donated by Burt and Linda Mashburn (P '09)
- Catered dinner for eight, donated by John and Heidi Vazzano (P '08 & P '09)
- Replica of helmet worn by NASCAR Sprint Cup driver, Carl Edwards, signed by Carl Edwards, driver of the No. 99 Rouch Fenway Racing Ford Fusion, donated by Edsel B. Ford ('68)
- Private cruise sailing to Block Island, donated by Bob Fountain '64
- iPod Classic, donated by Liang Yan/ Wang Jin (P '11)
- outings with teachers, epicurean adventures, sports games and memorabilia, golf packages, spa packages, gardening supplies, the list goes on and on.
What's missing? We're looking for the one-of-a-kind vacation home, experience or skill or talent that you might be willing to share.
Any and all donations will be gratefully accepted. If you are still not sure what to donate, please contact our Auction Coordinator, Evelina Erickson, ericksone@gunnery.org, for ideas and suggestions.

Head of School Susan Graham, Assistant Head Eileen Kelly-Aguirre, Dean of Students Rob Reinhardt, and the head of student government, senior prefect Joseph Mashburn welcomed the school community back to campus at Convocation, an event that formally begins the school year.
The naming of the highest scholars by grade level for the previous year (2007-2008) is the high point of the ceremony.

From the purchase of Bourne in 1958, the east wing of the building was a faculty apartment occupied by Jim & Evelyn Haddick, Russ Elgin, and, lastly, Bill Chase. Mr. Elgin fondly recalls the privacy of the stone porch with its graceful arches. Now the apartment has been converted to a bustling business office.
