Who was that distinguished man standing next to Michelle Obama and singled out by President Obama at the State of the Union address as an inspiration to the country?
The Gunnery and the Class of '66 knows. It was our man Leonard Abess.
A loyal alumnus who came back for both his 35th and 40th reunions, Len is well remembered here. He was president of the Debate Club and treasurer of the Spanish Club during his three-year matriculation. The '66 yearbook said that he was famous for the epigram "behind every picture is a great wall."
Here is what President Obama had to say about our man in the First Lady's Box in the Congressional Gallery on Feb. 24:

A disciplined cast, under the inspired direction of Thomas Gruenewald, delivered an outstanding performance of Neil Simon's The Good Doctor. Set in 19th century Russia, the play is written in the style of Chekhovian comedy. "Mr. Simon based this show on the short stories of Anton Chekhov," said Mr. Gruenewald. "The argument has gone on for over one hundred years as to whether Chekhov's later plays are comedies or tragedies." The Gunnery Drama Society certainly filled this show with several comedic peaks and valleys, giving the audience a night of funny and bittersweet moments.

Seniors, Ian Engelberger and Kurt Bailey spent the winter months working on independent studies (ISPs) in the arts. Ian, known on campus for his creative writing, pursued a study in photography while Kurt followed his film making aspirations by making a short film.

For the fifth consecutive year, two Gunnery students will study abroad in India at The Woodstock School through the SAGE (Studies Abroad for Global Education) Program. From June 2009 to January 2010, juniors John Charles and Nellie Simmons will participate in Woodstock's intense college preparatory program while immersing themselves in Indian culture. Woodstock is located in the foot hills of the Himalayas. "A friend of mine runs SAGE," said faculty member and English Department Chair, John Alter. "We were interested in getting involved, as we felt it would be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for our students. This is an experience unlike any other."
All applicants were required to write a letter of interest to be considered for the program. Mr. Alter and the school administration reviewed the letters and interview potential applicants. "In addition to those who present strong academic skills, we look at students who can handle extreme challenges," said John, "after all; they will be far away from home for a long period of time."

Head of School, Susan Graham and the Advancement Office recently hosted a reception for current parents at Conroy House. "Approximately 48 people showed up," said Evelina Erickson, Director of Parent Programs and Major Reunions. "This was a chance for parents to socialize and get to know each other. We, as an office, also proposed a challenge to the parents. To date, 45% of current parents are donors to the school's Annual Fund. Our goal is to increase the participation level to 55%." The parent class with the highest participation will win a dress down day and ice cream social at Conroy for their kids.

Cpt. Adam Peacock '00 served in Iraq for fifteen months and surprisingly, described his experience as being "fun." This admission would no doubt perplex or bewilder most civilians. During his tour of duty, he moved around the country. In some places, he felt safe. In others, he and the rest of his brigade were on edge.
