On The Go - April 2009

Sometimes you have such a passionate interest in something, you just can't wait. Such was Andrew Rinaldi '10's interest in building a green computer. That's why Andrew petitioned to do an academic independent studies project under advisor Chris Waldman. He sought to best the Dell company's hybrid computer in both energy savings and power; and he did both. [continued]

Founders Day, the much-beloved regatta for approximately 26 boarding schools, goes golden this year. Several Gunnery community members are working hard to make this year better than the rest. Parents Kay Caroe and Ted DePoala are putting together a program commemorating the fifty years history of this event. Specialty t-shirts and hats are being made, designed by Anna Kjellson and Vineyard Vines who are also sponsoring the program. The Gunnery welcomes you - alumni, parents, friends - to join us in this history making event. Founders Day will be held on Lake Waramaug on Sunday, May 3, 2009.

"My career in journalism has leaned towards the criminal justice system," said Richard "Dick" Lehr '72. "Justice motivates me — seeking and exposing justice and injustice which is an important part of our American society.

Dick is an award-winning former investigative reporter of The Boston Globe and currently, a journalist professor at Boston University. He is the co-author of the New York Times bestseller Black Mass: The Irish Mob, the FBI, and a Devil's Deal and most recently co-author of Judgment Ridge: The True Story of the Dartmouth Murders. He specializes in stories of police lying and wrongful convictions. In 2003, his investigation into the 1989 conviction of Shawn Drumgold for the murder of a 12-year-old Roxbury girl led to Drumgold's release from a sentence of life without parole. Mr. Lehr uncovered a pattern of police witness intimidation, witness recantations, and new alibi evidence. His stories in The Boston Globe led to court hearings to review his findings and eventually, complete exoneration for Drumgold. [continued]

"I remember the scary librarian," said Head Librarian Susan Rogers. "I vowed never to scare a kid out of the library." Susan, along with fellow librarian Sheila Kahn and faculty member Willie Smith, have worked together to make the library a resourceful tool for Gunnery students. In addition to The Gunnery's many books, reference materials, and database accesses, Susan and Sheila also search an inter-library loan program to enhance the individual projects of students and faculty. According to Jarrod Sisk, "This year our Wall Street visit wasn't so different from other years except that during our visit the Dow was up 100 points and after we left it went back down - we didn't know if we could take credit for the uptick." Every year Mr. Sisk takes a group of his students to the financial district in New York to introduce them to the wonders, mysteries, and excitement of the world's busiest markets. [continued]

The new mantra across the country is about hope and change. The Gunnery is hoping for change too! The power of a gift is that is can bring change.

Fact: Last year 182 of you supported the Annual Fund in the classes of 1984-2008.

Fact: Classes from 1980- 2008 represent more than 50% of the alumni body yet our giving represented less than 10% of last year's annual fund donors.

Need For Change:
  • To effect this change a group of alumni are challenging the classes of 1984-2008.
  • For every new gift or increased gift these generous alumni will match dollar for dollar up to $25,000.
  • Our goal is to have 526 donors from the classes of 1984-2008 by close of the Annual Fund June 30th.
Over the next few weeks, you will hear about several alumni who have met this challenge. We hope you will be as moved by their stories as we are.

Until then, click here and make that gift. The future of The Gunnery is in our hands, if your experience meant something to you, this is the time to show the importance of the school in your life. Change is in our hands.

We received many responses to last month's Gunnery detective question. Thank you to all who responded. If you have comments, please send them to Paula Krimsky.

1) The photo was taken in the paper dorms - just look at the walls. Peter Feen '99

2) I don't know the whole thing but I 'think' I can add some info. The middle person appears to be Panu (Nook) Puntoomsinchai and the background person Andrew Eckstein. The picture is so small it's hard to tell much more. The foreground person could be Peter Herrick or Bill Chase. I would discount Bill Chase though as the picture person did not appear to be losing their hair at the time. ...continued

Unlike many pre-law students, Diana Delaney '91 did not major in political science or law studies during her undergraduate days at Wheaton College. She pursued her B.A. degree in English literature. This was probably the best choice she ever could have made; the intense reading and writing skills prepared her for her future as an attorney at Regan Associates in Massachusetts.

After graduating from the New England School of Law (now named the New England Law of Boston), she spent 18 months as an assistant district attorney in the Boston area. "It was one of the most difficult jobs I ever had," she said, "but the training I received was amazing. I tried my first case in the first or second week of being there. I really had to think on my feet, half the time I was not prepared for the curve balls, but you learned to be prepared for anything." [continued]
