Ian Gracey Takes the Helm of the Admission Office
“Groton School ensures bright students a thorough education of mind, body, and spirit.” So began Ian Gracey’s first address at a late August faculty meeting. What followed was part presentation and part open discussion about the perception of Groton School beyond the Circle. No conclusions were drawn, but faculty left the meeting with a sense of the direction that Ian Gracey intended to lead Groton School’s Admission Office. He is clearly intent on widening the exposure of Groton School and will define and articulate the Groton experience to those unfamiliar with the School. continued

From The Circle
From the Desk of the Assistant Head Aimeclaire Roche: Recruiting and Hiring Faculty
Groton heartily welcomed 11 new faculty members this fall. With a wealth of experiences both in and out of the classroom, our new members of the faculty hail from as far away as Arcangues, France, and Seattle, Washington, and as close as Groton itself, as one of our two teaching interns is himself a Groton graduate in the Form of 2003, and as our sabbatical replacement in the Arts Department comes to us after a 24-year career at neighboring Lawrence Academy. continued

Groton Students Celebrate Ramadan
On Thursday October 11, Groton School students of all faiths celebrated Ramadan with a day-long fast in unity with Groton’s Muslim community. Led by Sahin Naqvi ’08, the day of fast commenced just prior to sunrise on Thursday with a 6:00 a.m. breakfast in the dining hall. 60 students wore wear wrist bands indicating that they were participants in the day of fasting and joined together at sundown to celebrate with a traditional Islamic meal. The fast was an opportunity for Groton students to identify with the suffering of underprivileged people of all faith throughout the world. continued

Groton Boys Cross Country off to Quick Start
Groton Boys Cross Country is off to a quick start! With a record of eight wins and two losses, the team has again positioned itself to challenge for an ISL title this year. Ashley and Elise Kang’s Commitment
to Helping North Koreans

“What is your dream?” This question was regularly asked of sisters and Groton Sixth Formers Ashley Kang and Elise Kang during the weeks they spent with teens who had recently deserted from North Korea at the Hangyore Middle and High School in South Korea. Ashley and Elise tutored students one-on-one and as teacher’s aids in English in preparation for exams and less formally in United States culture and society.

The process of integrating North Koreans into South Korean society is managed by the South Korean government and includes a mandatory 10-week program at Hanawon School. Many of the children also attend the Hangyore Middle and High School, as it is one of the only legitimate schools for North Korean refugees in South Korea. continued

Alumni Association Celebrates in New York City
Listening to the strains of Ravel, a Groton alumni contingent gathered in New York's Central Park in mid-July for one of the Philharmonic's free concerts. Merrill Stubbs '95 and Corey Binns '95, the event organizers in their roles as New York City Chairs for the GWN and GSAA respectively, staked out prime lawn real estate prior to the concert, which was made festive with maroon, black, and white balloons. continued

What Do You Do On Your Third Sebbatical
I can remember sitting in a Faculty Benefits Committee meeting with former headmaster Bill Polk ’58, who must have been feeling a bit defensive because he said, “You know we’re one of the few schools that grant a second sabbatical.” Having already taken my second sabbatical, all I could think was: “What about the third and fourth?” continued
