Peabody Press - A Groton School Newsletter - May 2007
Reunion 2007 Reunion 2007 was blessed with not only terrific weather but by the memories and laughter of close to 750 alumni, spouses, and families. Beginning Friday, May 11 with receptions and dinner under the tent, right on through to Chapel on Sunday morning May 13, the reunion Forms were treated to excellent music, terrific food, and the singular experience of the Circle in spring. Members of Form of 1972 enjoyed the opportunity to throw out the first pitch prior to Varsity Baseball's near shut-out victory over St. George's. The rowers of '82 were out on the water again, skimming up and down the Nashua River, quickly regaining the tempo and form of their Groton days. The Form Dinners on Saturday evening ranged from intimate gatherings in the Webb-Marshall Room and the Library to spirited celebrations by the Form of 2002 celebrating their 5th reunion at the Niles'. It was a marvelous weekend for all members of the Groton family and we look forward to gathering again in May 2008!   View the Reunion 2007 Slide Show

Breaking Records!
As part of the regular schedule of events over Reunion Weekend, the President of the Annual Fund provides an update on the Annual Fund. This year's address by John Jacobsson '86, Trustee, was anything but standard. John's update focused on the generous giving of all alumni but highlighted the many Reunion Forms that have set new records in dollars raised. continued

From The Circle
Young Poets' Festival

Dar Williams Groton School hosted the 26th annual Young Poets' Festival featuring folk singer Dar Williams on Thursday, April 26. Eleven schools sent one to six students to perform their poems and/or songs at the Festival and to hear Dar sing and talk about her life as a songwriter. Groton students who participated in the event were
Bess Chapman '07, Joanna Hamer '08, Chris Pitsiokos '08, and Davis Vigneault '07. This is the second year Groton has hosted this event, and we will continue it next year before sending it off to another school. Though the Young Poets' Festival has traditionally focused on poetry and not songs, it was a nice twist to hear musical accompaniment to some of the students' lyrics.

Christian Fellowship

On most Wednesday evenings, the Admission Office is abuzz with activity, although not with the kind usually found there. Instead, on these evenings, it is home to the Groton Christian Fellowship, a group of students, alumni, and guests who get together for lively discussions of Christian faith and its meaning in their lives. continued

Oklahoma!

BOFFO! Groton School Drama took the reigns of Rogers and Hammerstein's Oklahoma! and to sold-out performances delivered all the humor, drama, music, and dancing of this beloved American theater icon. The student performances were stellar. Evan Cole's '07 Curly was exceptional, his comic timing and vocal performance stunning. Bringing a steely sweetness to the role of the conflicted young woman, Caitlin Holmes '08 as Laurey was equally powerful. continued

SoonKyu Park '09 Performs for Local Senior Citizens

In the month of April GCS sought volunteers to give musical performances at two local senior residence communities. On two consecutive Tuesdays in April, SoonKyu Park '09 gave solo flute performances at Petapawag and Groton Commons, respectively. A member of the Chamber Orchestra, SoonKyu is accustomed to performing as a member of an ensemble, but he transitioned seamlessly into the role of soloist. SoonKyu performed Concerto in G by Carl Stamitz (for Flute and Orchestra) and Flute Concerto No. 1 in G by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (for Flute and Orchestra) to the delight of the senior citizens. SoonKyu enjoyed the experience immensely. Freed from the desire to play perfectly, he found himself enjoying the music right along with the audience and is looking forward to the opportunity for a return engagement.

Faculty Profile: Rebecca Stanton
Rebecca Stanton
Rebecca Stanton, co-head of the Modern Language Department and devoted French teacher, has set four goals for her sabbatical next year, time she will be spending in Paris with her husband Gary Stanton, their daughter Emilie, who is in IV Form, and son Alexander, age 12. All together, the goals provide a perfect example of why this significant faculty benefit—the opportunity every ten years to spend a year off campus, at full pay plus a stipend—is so vital to both our faculty and our students.

Stanton's first goal is to come back speaking Spanish fluently. "Spanish literature, history, and culture are intertwined with those of France and the rest of Europe," says Stanton. "I studied Spanish in high school and don't speak it well. Being fluent will broaden my understanding of the French." She has a second reason for pursuing Spanish, she explains, one that is not directly connected to teaching. "Almost half of Groton's students take Spanish," says Stanton, "so improving my Spanish will help me relate to the students in the other half of my department."

Stanton's second goal also is language related. continued
