This year's first Islamic Society activity, organized to promote greater
understanding and stronger interfaith relations, took place on the 20th day
of the holy month of Ramadan 1427 (October 12, 2006).
Abstaining from food and beverages (including water) from sunrise to sunset,
approximately 85 students participated in the fourth annual School-wide Day
of Fasting. Following Islamic tradition, they started their day before sunrise
with a special breakfast (suhoor) that was held in the Dining Hall.

Girls Varsity Basketball Gets Tournament Berth
The Zebra's basketball program had another strong season, once again
finishing in the top 5 in Class B of the New England Prep School Athletic
Conference and advancing to post-season play. The Zebras have established
themselves as one of the most consistently competitive teams in our class.
Groton earned a 5 seed in the New England Class B tournament and was paired
against Cushing Academy. Behind tremendous fan and parent support, the
Zebras held a narrow lead the entire game until the 6:45 mark when Cushing
tied the game. There were several lead changes down the stretch, but some
hot shooting by Cushing allowed them to take the victory. Cushing went on
to win the Class B title.
Congratulations to the whole team on a wonderful season!
Boys and Girls Lacrosse Teams Headed South for an Early Start

Boys Lacrosse: Twenty-eight Groton boys headed to Cocoa Beach,
Florida, for the Royal
Palms lacrosse tournament from March 12-17. Groton joined other independent
schools for a jump on the spring season with practices and games against
top quality competition. Faculty members Bob Low, Will Webb, and Sarah
Webb joined the boys for the week of hard work and spirited competition.
In addition to two-a-day practices and evening games, the group took some
time to rest sore muscles on the beach, watched a few college games, and
enjoyed all that Cocoa Beach had to offer.

Girls Lacrosse: Coach Keri Dunn and 24 players in the girls'
lacrosse program traveled to
Spring Fling, the nation's largest women's lacrosse spring training venue.
It was held in Palm Beach County, Florida, March 9-16. Groton, one of 16
prep school teams attending, joined more than 110 college teams to enjoy
outstanding facilities and beautiful weather. The Groton girls played
plenty of lacrosse, averaging one two-to-three-hour practice session and
one game against another prep school team each day. With all this, they
still managed to have a lot of fun, including taking a snorkel catamaran
cruise, spending a day at the beach and a night at CityPlace Shopping
Pavilion, as well as watching several Division I and Division III college
games. Having lost 11 players from last year's squad, the week was a great
team builder and good preseason preparation for the months ahead!

Winter Dance Concert
On Thursday, March 1, the Winter Dance Concert took place in the Campbell
Performing Arts Center. With choreography by Jennifer Diedrich, 11 young
women took the stage before a packed house of enthusiastic fans. The girls
performed eight modern dance pieces to upbeat and high-energy songs.
Highlights included a terrific tap number set to "Hit Me Up" by Gia Farrell
and performed by Jane Bang '10, Skylar Cruz '10, Vicky Doñe '07, Liz
Kalaris '07, Jacki Marrinan '07, and Hannah Wellman '08. Vicky Doñe '07
choreographed a solo piece to "Bailamos," a Latin remix by Enrique
Inglesias that brought down the house. The final number, to "Dance with Me"
by Drew Sealy, was energizing as dancers, including Beth McKie '10, Thea
Fisher '10, Olga Alekseeva '07, and Katherine Dwyer '07 moved in complex
patterns and ended the show with a flourish. The term's hard work paid off,
as the show was a smashing success!

On Sunday, February 25, St. John's Chapel welcomed guest preacher the
Reverend Kathleen McAdams of the Ecclesia Ministries, a community of faith
that engages the homeless and the privileged—including service providers,
clergy, church communities, seminarians, and others—in activities
that help meet the physical, social, and spiritual needs of the homeless.

Parent Roundtable
On Saturday, February 21, the Gammons Recital Hall was the setting for the
second Parent Roundtable. Rick Commons, the students who lead the Cultural
Alliance, and their faculty sponsor, Rebecca Stanton, welcomed 19 parents
for a discussion of Diversity: Embracing our Differences. Students introduced
themselves to the parents and discussed their experiences as members of the
Groton School community and their work with the Cultural Alliance. From
organizing Martin Luther King Day workshops to bringing speakers to campus,
the students of the Cultural Alliance work to enhance the education of
all students. Parents and students were united in the desire to encourage
and facilitate opportunities for Groton students to engage with diverse
cultures beyond the Circle. The group also discussed the issues of faculty
retention and student admissions. The hour and half passed quickly, and
parents lingered afterwards to follow up with each other and with the
Headmaster on the ideas that were raised.
Groton Mathematicians Dive into the World of Competitive Mathematics
Under the coaching of faculty member Jon Creamer and the student leadership
of Wyatt Hong '08, Groton students are once again pursuing mathematic glory
beyond the Circle. A group of 10 students meets once a month in the
Science Wing to participate in the
New England Math League and are joined by other students as
their afternoon schedules allow. Many of these students qualified for the
regional competition this year.

Sixth-former Kelsey Maguire is six feet tall. She also has a beautiful soprano
voice and an outgoing, caring personality that puts people at ease. Not one to
take these gifts for granted, however, Kelsey knows that it takes work to get
the most out of them and to enjoy them. Co-captain of the basketball team, head
chorister, leader of Madrigals and the Grotones, a student-run a capella singing
group that sings pop, and, by-the-by, a semi-finalist in the National Merit
Scholarship Program (winners will be announced later this spring), Kelsey
clearly is working hard.
Take, for instance, her basketball career. Although, because of her height,
Kelsey seemed a natural for the sport, she says it was a challenge to figure
out exactly where her talents lay and then to develop them. "When I started
playing varsity in the III Form, our coach had me playing guard," says Kelsey.
"But when our new coach Sue Wynn took over, she changed our whole approach."
Named the center, Kelsey found herself playing more under the basket against
girls who were much stronger than she was. "I worked a lot on weight lifting,
and now I don't feel that I am getting pushed around as much as I used to,"
says Kelsey. "I started practicing a lot underneath the basket and working on
flip movements and other weird things with both my wrists. That gave me a lot
of control, and now I can shoot both right- and left-handed pretty well."
Kelsey also worked on movements to keep the ball out of the way of other tall
players, because she realized, she says, that she was "not the person who is
going to be able to push herself through a crowd of physically stronger players."
That first year, playing center, Kelsey helped her teammates go from a 4-16
record the previous year to a 12-10 record, advancing the Zebras to the
semi-finals of the New England Prep School Athletic Conference B playoffs.
Kelsey's singing career followed a similar path. continued
