On June 3, 82 members of the Form of 2007 took their first steps as alumni, having received their diplomas and shaken hands with Chairman of the Board of Trustees Jamie Higgins P'02, '06 and Headmaster Rick Commons amidst the cheers and ovations from family, friends, formmates, and faculty. The day was cloudy, but one could hardly tell as the cheerful smiles of the graduates provided more than enough brilliance. continued

Alumni Association Welcome Dinner
A highlight of the week leading up to Prize Day is the annual Sixth Form dinner given by the Alumni Association to honor the Form's accomplishments and welcome them into the association. Held at The Barn at Gibbet Hill, the sixth formers were treated to a fabulous prime rib dinner and a few parting gifts, but the highlight of the evening was an inspiring talk by Ann Hopkins Gildroy '94.

Ann's appearance at the dinner was fortuitous, as she was spending her last weekend in Boston prior to shipping back out to Iraq for a year to work as an advisor to General David Petraeus, commander of the Multi-National Force - Iraq.   continued

Groton Girls Crew Wins
the NEIRA Regatta at Quinsigamond

On May 26, the Groton School varsity crews arrived in Worcester, Massachusetts, to take part in the New England Interscholastic Rowing Association's annual regatta. Groton brought eight boats to the Championship and all but one boat finished in the medals. The Groton girls crews showed strength across the board winning not only many of their final heats but also winning the Girl's Four w/ coxswain Team Championship Cup and securing a berth in the 2007 US Rowing Youth National Championships at Harsha Lake in Batavia, Ohio. The Groton boys enjoyed a similarly excellent day with all four of its boats finishing with medals. The boys first boat finished second in the final heat behind Belmont Hill, a fateful turn of events as Belmont Hill and Groton were tied for points at the completion of competition. The tie was broken by Belmont Hill's first place finish in the final heat, thus the Championship Cup travels to Belmont Hill. All was not lost as the first boat's time was good enough to also secure a trip to Ohio for the Youth Championships. Congratulations to the crews and coaches for a fabulous season! Applied Mathematics' Egg Catapult
The Applied Mathematics classes under the leadership of faculty mentors Jon Choate '60, P'85, '88's and Jon Creamer's course had the opportunity in the spring term to apply themselves to the design and construction of catapults using the classic Trebuchet as a model. Split into two teams, the students worked together to build two full-sized catapults. Each designed to hurl small objects - eggs, oranges, apples, and bananas, they were unveiled and put into service on the Saturday prior to Prize Day. The traditional "egg drop" off St. John's Chapel tower was replaced by the egg fling. A large crowd of students, faculty, children, and parents gathered and were caught up in the festive atmosphere and thrill of seeing these imposing machines do their stuff. After a few test flings with candy, the teams got down to work experimenting with various fruit, testing tensions, adjusting angles, and generally enjoying the aspects of Applied Mathematics. Cheers go out to both teams for their successful labors!

Epiphany School Clean-Up Day
On a beautiful Saturday morning, an enthusiastic group of approximately 30 Groton alumni, parents, current students, and friends joined together for a community service project at Epiphany School, a tuition-free middle school for children of economically disadvantaged families from Boston neighborhoods. With gardening gloves and shovels in tow, the group spent the morning weeding flower beds and planting trees, shrubs, and grasses using a design by Polly Cross Reeve '78, P'07, '09. The group was fortunate to have both Peggy Nestler P'10 and Lili Hanna Morss '77, P'09 to turn to for landscaping expertise as it transformed the barren strip of land into a beautiful oasis.

The group celebrated their hard work with a delicious meal that was prepared and served by an Epiphany cooking class. The Rev. John Finley '88, co-founder and headmaster of Epiphany, thanked the group and spoke a few words about Epiphany and its mission.   View more pictures from the clean-up!

Bob Whitney Retires
Bob Whitney
After serving what Headmaster Richard Commons estimates to be 3.6 million meals to the Groton community, Robert Whitney, head of the Dining Hall since 1988, retired this June. He'll be very much missed by all of the Groton community; and when you talk to him, it is clear why. Not only does Whitney maintain the highest standards of quality and good service, but he also holds to another strong guiding principle-and that is making sure that dining at Groton, whether eating a meal in the Dining Hall, having tea in the Library, or attending a reception in the Headmaster's House, is a pleasure.

Whitney's father ran a diner in Orange, Massachusetts, for 35 years, and although Whitney tried other vocations in the 1960s during his time in the military, once back in civilian life he returned to the culinary business. continued
