Beginning next fall, Groton will offer an elective course in Chinese 1 for V and VI Formers, an exciting first step in what has the potential to be the eventual addition of a fuller program in Mandarin.
For a number of years the question of adding a non-Western modern language to Groton's academic program has been considered and discussed by members of this extended community. We are living in a time when schools, including this one, increasingly feel a responsibility to be training its students to be globally aware.

Winter Alumni Day 2008

The New Year started off on a competitive albeit friendly note at Alumni Winter Games day, held on Sunday, January 6th. Alumni spanning the form years of 1969 to 2007 returned for spirited contests in the courts and on the ice with current students. Perennial favorite Steve Hill '80 once again showed enthusiasm and vigor on the parquet while Terry Hardwood '81, P '07, '09, '12 demonstrated his skating prowess alongside his three sons in the Junie O'Brien hockey rink. With family, friends, and members of the School community cheering the athletes on, the students proved their mettle once again on the scoreboards but were challenged by alumni for the most-spirited and creative play.

From the Desk of Athletic Director Bob Low

Dear Zebra Fans,
As the mercury drops precipitously and I tap my keyboard furiously to encourage blood flow in my fingers (-2 degrees as I tap), our sports teams are engaged on the grueling ISL winter battlefield. With our grass playing fields blanketed under deep snow, fall seems remote and somewhat foreign. Still, it was an exciting fall, worthy of mention.

Groton Celebrates Martin Luther King Jr. Day

On Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Mark Mathabane, author of many books, most notably Kaffir Boy, walked to the podium in the Asen Theater and began an address to the Groton community that kept us spellbound for over an hour. Weaving together quotes and references, from a host of literary and historic references including John Milton, Abraham Lincoln, Anne Frank, and Robert Frost, Mr. Mathabane softly unfolded his life story in such a way as to reveal universal truths about the nature of "Our Common Humanity."

Tree Weave - A Quiet Corner
Gallery Talk with artist Barbara Andrus
On Thursday, January 17, members of the Groton community gathered with guests from off campus to open the winter exhibit in The de Menil Gallery. During a three-week period in January Barbara Andrus installed an astoundingly graceful and innovative series of sculptures using wood and branches that she gathered from around her two homes: birch from Swans Island, Maine, and American elm from Cabrini Boulevard on New York's Upper West Side.

An Orthographic Opportunity

Remember your final word in the Groton Spelling Bee, the one that your last opponent missed but you knew? Can you spell it today? Of course you do. Of course you can. Was it millennium, mellifluous, irreconcilable, or baccalaureate?
This April will commemorate the twenty-fifth anniversary of the Groton School Spelling Bee, and to celebrate all alumni are invited to return to campus to watch as past winners partake in an evening of orthographic fun when they battle this year's students for the title of Groton Spelling Bee Champion.

Make Mine Green!

Gone are the Styrofoam hot beverage cups from the Circle and in their place are reusable mugs. This is one small example of the Groton community’s efforts to focus on the environment this year. The summer School Read was The Future of Life by Edward O. Wilson which highlights the endangered treasures of our natural world, there was a lecture by Bill McKibben whose talk focused on conservation and consumption reduction, and now the Circle is engaged in an environmental contest called the Green Cup Challenge. continued

Looking back over my 28 years in the classroom, on the athletic field, and in the dormitory, I recall teaching my first class of students who were not much younger than I was. I have come a long way. One of the many valuable lessons that I have learned throughout these incredibly fulfilling years is that as an educator, I still have opportunities to learn and to grow as an individual. I have always been interested in helping others during crisis, and during my sabbatical in 1992-'93 I successfully completed a course to become an Emergency Medical Technician. This intensive 180-hour course enabled me to join the town's Emergency Medical Service as a call-EMT. Having successfully participated in many emergency situations for the town of Groton as well as neighboring areas whenever the need arose, I am now expanding my skills to include firefighting.
