Competing for an audience with Lenny Kravitz or the Brazil/Argentina soccer
game is no small feat, but the Groton School Choir did just that (and held
their own) this summer. Forty-five students and faculty arrived in Rio
on July 6, beginning the first international concert tour for the Groton
School Choir. After a day of rest and rehearsal, the choir began its
adventures with a visit to a neighborhood Samba School. They enjoyed a
samba concert and dancing with the Philadelphia Youth Orchestra and a
women's choir from Cidade de Deus, one of Rio's poorest favelas.

Headmaster's House Renovation Underway
Wrapped in blaze-orange temporary fencing, the Headmaster's House is a
shell of its former self. Most of the asbestos removal work is complete.
Workers encased in white HZMAT suits and masks thrust construction
debris out of the windows into a waiting dumpster manned by a coworker
who hosed down the rubble to prevent asbestos dust from settling around
the Circle. The deleading continues as interior sections of the house are
swathed in heavy-duty plastic sheets with posted warnings taped to every
egress.

Survey Results

We asked and you answered! Thank you to the 580 respondents to our
first electronic survey. Collectively you have provided us with a
number of specific and noteworthy ways in which to improve not only the
Peabody Press, but also the Groton School Quarterly and our website.
While there were numerous responses that patted us on the back and assured
us that the essentials of the Peabody Press—length of articles,
topics for articles, layout, and the pictures—are perfect, we had
just as many responses that encouraged us to make changes that would
enhance the overall experience of reading the newsletter.

kitchen in San José. What follows are excerpts from his diary.

GCS Blog

The Groton Community Service program has inaugurated a new means of
communicating with the larger Groton School community around the
challenges and rewards of community service at Groton. The
Groton Community Service Blogspot was unveiled this past July. Faculty
member Sarah Webb, co-head with Cathy Folts of the GCS, hopes that the GCS
blog will provide Groton students the opportunity to reflect more deeply
on the service that they do, both on the Circle and beyond.
