A Message from the Head

Dear Alumni/ae,
Greetings from BB&N! These are exciting times at your alma mater.
Two weeks ago, we opened the doors for the first time on the beautiful new
building that not only reshapes our Upper School art, science, and academic
facilities, but also enhances our commitment to providing our students and
faculty with welcoming spaces that foster a culture of collaborative
learning.
We hope this newsletter helps to reconnect you with the vitality and
innovation that's found in and out of our classrooms, as well as throughout
our impressive alumni/ae network. Thank you for your commitment to the
School, and we hope to see you soon on
campus or at the alumni/ae events that occur during the year!
With best regards,
Rebecca T. Upham
Head of School

Jamie Baker '78: In the Common Defense

It's a good sign that you've written something important when your
book jacket features blurbs of praise from a Who's Who of Washington D.C.
power brokers that include former Senators, Secretaries of Defense,
Attorney Generals, and Chairmen of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
Such is the case with the recent book written by Jamie Baker '78, In
the Common Defense: National Security for Perilous Times. Judge Baker
was appointed to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Armed Forces in 2000.
He is one of five judges who are appointed for 15-year terms by the
President. (In fact, Baker hosted a BB&N alumni/ae reception at the
Court of Appeals in April this year.)

Bus Departs for Bivouac
Hoisting bags in many cases as big as themselves, BB&N 9th
Graders set off for another year of Bivouac early in the morning on
September 10. The annual rite of passage for freshmen always features
hugs, smiles, and plenty of anxious parents to send the packed bus off
on its way.
"I'm confident that they'll return having had a great learning experience
and with more knowledge about not only their classmates, but themselves
as well," said Dixie Morse (P '09, '11), who has been through the process
before with her oldest son. "It's a great program."
New Upper School Building Opens to Rave Reviews
After three years of planning, construction, and hard work by the entire
BB&N community, the much anticipated new wing of the Upper School
Building has opened, generating excitement among faculty, staff, and
students.
"The result is breathtaking," said Head of School Rebecca T. Upham. "We
can see clearly now how this space will encourage collaboration among
students and faculty."
No longer having to dodge construction tape and trucks, students made
their way through the brand new glass front entryway on the first day of
classes, catching their first glimpse of the new wing as it was unveiled
during a morning assembly.

Monster Bash

On a blistering summer evening in June, more than 100 young alumni/ae and
guests came together atop the Green Monster at Fenway Park. Alumni/ae
enjoyed reconnecting with old friends and classmates, snacking on Fenway
fare, gazing out onto Fenway Park, and — one of the highlights of the
evening — taking photographs with the 2004 World Series Trophy! It
was a great evening that strongly kicked off this year's Annual Fund!

Do You Know? (Answer)

The BB&N seal was created in 1979 by Mrs. Sybil d'Arbeloff (P '76, '78, '79)
to include
coats of arms of founders: lion on left from Markham family crest
(Buckingham); lion on right from Browne family crest; middle pheons
(broad barbed arrows or heads of javelins) from Nichols crest; leaves
above the shield are from the Buckingham seal; the colors combine
Buckingham's blue and yellow and B&N's black and white.
