A Message from Caroline Kotter '08

Caroline Kotter '08 Happy New Year!

If you haven't already been back to the School to visit our new space at the Upper School, I hope you will visit soon so you can see the impact the new building is having on the US Community. It has not only opened up space to sit with classmates, study, and meet with faculty, you can now walk around without (literally) bumping into everyone you know. It has also given us unbelievable art and dance studios, music rooms, and more.

As a photography student during the past four years, I am thrilled to be able to work in a state-of-the-art photo lab. The new lab, with its floor-to-ceiling windows, encourages students to come in. There is more table space to spread out all of your work for editing session as well as wall space for a class critique. I am so thankful to be able to enjoy this space during my last year at BB&N.

I hope to see many of you wandering the halls soon while you are back for a visit and I look forward to joining the alumni/ae community after graduation in June!

Sincerely,
Caroline Kotter '08

Getting Ready for our 20th Reunion:
Todd DeAngelis '88

Todd DeAngelisTodd DeAngelis looks back at favorite faculty and memories from high school while he is working on planning his 20th Reunion in June.

Favorite faculty that I remember...
I will never forget Doc Walters. He could always make us think, laugh and learn at the same time. I would also be remiss if I didn't mention Mr. Bryant. If it weren't for him being my advisor, coach and friend, I don't think I would have had the same experience as I had at BB&N. There were many other faculty members who had a lasting impression on me in one way or another, including Mr. Tower, Mr. O'Brien, Mr. Stonestreet, Mr. Leith, Mr. Farber, Mr. Deveney, Mr. Quain, Mr. Norton, and I can't forget Mr. Etter on the athletic side of things. We had a great group of faculty who I probably didn't appreciate as much at the time, but I'm glad we had all of them. I'm excited to see any and all faculty who show up at Strawberry Night in June!

Memories of school and the 80's...
There are too many memories to list (and many that I can't and won't repeat), but here's one from school… continued

Upper School Fall Play Tackles
Little Performed Shakespeare Work

Students Performing All's Well That Ends Well is not one of Shakespeare's better known plays, but judging from BB&N's Upper School production last month, perhaps its merit as a more common theater staple should be revisited.

The plot is typically Shakespearean with narrative twists, witty dialogue, mistaken identities, and numerous character agendas all culminating in the dramatic finish. A young woman, Helen, heals a king with her deceased father's potion, and as a result may choose one of his knights for a husband. continued

Boys' Varsity Soccer Wraps up Great Year

Soccer After an inspired season, and 19 hard fought games, BB&N's Boys' Varsity Soccer season came down to one minute of furious play. Facing soccer powerhouse Avon Old Farms (a large all-boys school) in the New England Class A tournament finals, the Knights fell 1-0 in the last minute of overtime despite taking the play to the opponents for much of the extra time.

"Both teams had their spurts of good soccer in the final game, and we actually out chanced Avon in overtime," says Coach Jesse Sarzana '93. "But they found a way to pull it out in the end—something we'd been doing all season." continued

On the Road

Before the snow started falling on the East Coast, the NYC Executive Committee hosted a young alumni/ae pub night at Art Bar. With solid representation from the Executive Committee and friends, all had a great time in our private room at the bar. Thanks to everyone who came. We hope to see more of you at BB&N in NYC coming up — hopefully in just a few weeks at the New York Reception on February 7th!

Just a few months prior, BB&N hosted its fourth regional Campaign Kickoff in Los Angeles on Thursday, October 25th. Faculty guest and Upper School French teacher Brigitte Tournier joined Head of School Rebecca T. Upham in sharing perspectives on the School, the campaign, and the impact of the new Upper School wing, Renaissance Hall.

Thanksgiving Weekend — Alumni/ae Events

Recent Grads' Coffee More than 60 college-age graduates enthusiastically returned to BB&N on Wednesday, November 21 for the Recent Grads' Coffee to see friends, former classmates and faculty. Alums swarmed the halls of the newly renovated Upper School, eager to see the finished project and excited to roam the new halls as they searched for their favorite faculty members - many now located in new classrooms! The Class of 2007 enjoyed seeing their senior tiles hanging alongside their peers' artwork in the new building and all recent grads were invited to attend the Upper School Thanksgiving Assembly, allowing them to hear current happenings and see more faculty members.

Also during Thanksgiving Weekend close to 70 young alums met up at the Rattlesnake in Boston for a young pub night. It was a great weekend to host this event, as many members of the Classes of 1992-2003 from out of town were in Boston for just a few days but excited to reconnect with everyone!

My Connection to BB&N - Alex Blake '93
Alex Blake

Alex Blake '93 recounts her favorite memories from her days at BB&N and reflects upon her connection to BB&N as she looks ahead to her 15th Reunion coming up in June.

What I've done since BB&N... After BB&N I went to the George Washington University in DC and graduated with a degree in Finance, much to the surprise of almost everyone I know ("really? She was good at math? Huh!"). From there I went into Investor Relations, first at NASDAQ and then for an Irish-American company which involved lots of travel. I then took a year off to go live the high life in Barcelona, Spain. Now I'm back in Boston and have just opened my own real estate business, which is basically like first grade all over again — lots of new things to learn, a little anxiety, and plenty of interesting new people to meet. But, unlike first grade, the money is much better. continued

Annual Fund Challenge
The BB&N Annual Fund is starting off the year with a bang! An anonymous alum has made a $25,000 challenge grant to match new gifts of $2,000, or the difference between an alum's largest gift to date and $2,000. Those alumni/ae who have never given to the Annual Fund and give $2,000 this year will have their entire gift matched.

For more information, contact
Jo-Ann Lovejoy, Director of Annual Giving, at
jo-ann_lovejoy@bbns.org or 617-800-2723.

The Annual Fund fills the gap between tuition and the true cost of a BB&N education.
